AGRICULTURE | Natural Resource Generation

Agriculture operations in Jharkhand are primarily, of subsistence type due to lack of adequate irrigation facility, poor agricultural extension activity, lack of institutional credit flow, predominance of cereal crop (92%), and majority (40%) area being under mono crop rice. Even the Economic Survey of Agriculture and Sugarcane Department, 2009-10 underlines that only 1.1% operational holding are above 10 hectares covering about 9% of area.

Badlao Foundation has undertaken a number of steps to address the deteriorating sustainability problem. These interventions include promotion of sustainable agriculture, land development and plantation work, forest protection and development of water resources. The focus of interventions has differed with variation in the ecological condition over the operational area of the Foundation.

Badlao Foundationís intervention into sustainable agriculture took place about the time when there was opposition to the governmentís proposal of constructing a large dam on the river Patro at Budai village in Madhupur block of Deoghar district. The irrigation department had surveyed the area for construction of big Dam in which 43 tribals villages would be submerged. The infrastructure of the Dam was already created. Peopleís experience of such dam was painful. All the leading NGOs of this region came together to oppose the construction and forced the government to abandon the project.

For poor and marginal farmers, low-cost eco-friendly agriculture is promoted. Water harvesting tanks, ponds and wells have been constructed / renovated to check the erosion of soil and conserve surface water.

Renovation of Ponds
